The Physician Assistant (PA)/Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) for thoracic surgery will use an extensive thoracic knowledge base, physical examination skills, and diagnostic interventions to define the plan of care in collaboration with the thoracic surgeons within the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. The PA/ARNP will implement care plans and guide the house staff through writing appropriate orders and continually evaluating the post-surgery patient. The PA/ARNP will communicate with the family and referring physician through routine telephone calls and visits to the bedside, maintain collegial relationships with multi-disciplinary team members and respond to sudden changes that develop in a post surgery patients’ condition. He/she will also see thoracic surgery patients in clinic pre and post surgery and will help manage the patient’s care across the continuum of clinic, pre-op, hospitalization, discharge, and at home follow-up care.

The PA/ARNP will participate in the management of the post-op surgery patient – specifically focusing on known pre-operative co-morbidities, following extubation protocols, care maps, and facilitating the timely transferring of patients from the ICU to the floor unit. He/she would also oversee the initiation of oral medications from IV drips and would be involved in creative discharge planning (transfer to skilled nursing facilities, facilitate early discharge to home) or more expedient discharging, if required.

This is a faculty position within the School of Medicine. While candidates with at least five years experience are desired, training will be provided to candidates with fewer than five years experience and an interest in thoracic surgery patients.
